When You Need Independent Advice

INSIGHTS

More advice is not always the same as more clarity. Independent advice can help when the people around a decision are each focused on only one part of it.

Start with the question, not the job title

You may already have an agent, lawyer, manager, accountant or PR adviser. The question is not always whether another specialist is needed. It may be whether someone is looking at how the different pieces fit together around your priorities.

An independent adviser does not replace the people who know their own areas best. The role is to step back, understand the full situation and help you make a decision with the wider consequences in view.

Signs that more advice may not solve it

A situation may need perspective rather than another opinion when the same pattern keeps repeating. Each adviser may be giving sensible advice within their own role, while the wider decision remains unresolved.

  • You understand each piece of advice, but not what the pieces mean together.
  • Different recommendations are built around different assumptions or priorities.
  • A decision is moving quickly, but no one is considering the full set of consequences.
  • You are being asked to choose between advisers without a clear view of the question you are trying to answer.

What independent advice should add

A useful independent view should make the situation clearer, not create another layer of noise. It should identify what is known, what is uncertain and which trade-offs actually matter to you.

It can also help the advisers around you work from the same picture. Where a particular specialist is needed, the point is to identify that need early and make sure the specialist is briefed around the real question.

A useful test

Ask: what decision are we trying to make, and who is helping me see the whole decision? If the answer is unclear, more specialist advice may not be the first step.

Sometimes the most useful next step is a short conversation that brings the facts, priorities and options into one place. From there, it becomes easier to decide who else needs to be involved.
